Week 26

TIP OF THE WEEK

Take an inventory of what advice sits at the forefront of your mind. Is it good advice? Is it advice you would actually give a friend you loved? What do I mean by this? Well, if you have the desire to create things but you’re constantly stressed out - it may be because you’re walking around with some expectation that’s not even good for you to have of yourself. Pay attention to what thoughts are driving you. Are they even helping you move forward towards your goals?

JORDYN UPDATES

This is the opposite of what my week looked like, haha.

Highs of the week:
• I’m writing this newsletter a little early because my family is visiting me this week! I’ll be spending lots of great quality time with them.
• I worked insanely hard to get a lot done before they arrived. I’m proud of myself for the work I put in.
• You will definitely be seeing more reels and YouTube videos from me (I am going to be as consistent as I can without sacrificing my wellbeing in the process).

Reality of the week:
• As much as I’m proud of myself - I still have to fight a lot of negative thoughts throughout the week. I sometimes wonder if my videos are even good. I sometimes get super stressed. That’s reality - BUT I’m happy to say I’m usually fighting those thoughts well and living in a much more positive perspective.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Do you know why creative challenges often work to get creative momentum going? Limitations. Structure. Our culture nowadays is screaming “freedom”. Freedom to do whatever we want for the day. Freedom of time. Freedom of decision. This is great and it is desirable…to a point. Endless freedom to make any choice you want sounds ideal until you actually face it. This is often exemplified when trying to come up with a new creative idea out of thin air. There are so many possible things to think about it. How do you choose a direction? Sometimes freedom of choice works out well but there are other times that this freedom feels so overwhelming. This is why specific creative challenges can be a vehicle where creativity actually thrives.

Have you been wanting to create more videos but have no idea what to do? This is probably because your scope is too large. You may feel overwhelmed by the amount of options in front of you. In business, people often talk about finding your “target audience”. It’s commonly agreed upon that serving a specific audience is a much better use of your time, resources, and is much better for the audience themselves. You can help them more directly and will often serve nobody by trying to serve everybody. This idea is helpful when it comes to creativity too. If you’re struggling to find direction, choose a target. Limitations and structure are so helpful.

You may know this already, but here’s a reminder of how to help get your ideas a little more refined. Your thoughts could follow like this: I want to make a video. I want to make a video for creatives. I want to make a video for creatives who struggle with burn out. I want to make a video for creatives who struggle with burn out by sharing a personal story of how I’ve overcome it. I need to complete this video in 3 days. Whatever it looks by the end of the 3 days, I will be okay with and move on to my next project.

There’s some structure and limitations for you. Some things will be sacrificed by those limitations. Like maybe you can’t make the video as good as you wanted in only 3 days. BUT you still have a video. And if you were honest, you probably wouldn’t have created anything otherwise. So go for it! Set some structure and limitations and make some things! Woohoo!

You can see me doing that exact thing in my YouTube video this week. Some of you may be happy I made it. Some people might not love the video I made. That’s okay. I’m proud of myself for doing it anyway. Enjoy!

This week’s creative challenge:

In light of this week’s newsletter, I want you to come up with your own creative challenge. If you can learn the skill of creating limitations for yourself - you will probably actually make the things you want to! So, this week’s challenge is to complete your own creative challenge.
