Week 31
TIP OF THE WEEK
Something I’m bad at: location scouting. Man oh man do I wish I spent more time doing it. I encourage you to go out on a day where you don’t know what to do with your time and just go drive around. Try to find locations that inspire you. Maybe its an old abandoned barn on the side of the road? Maybe you see a wall that has a cool shadow on it at a certain time of day? Keep an ongoing note in your phone about these locations so the next time you want to get creative, you can choose one and have some fun with it.
JORDYN UPDATES
Highs of the week: | Reality of the week: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Colossians 3:23 |
31 weeks of this newsletter! I’m proud of that. Yeah, I’ve missed a few here and there but it’s been for good reason every time. Thank you so much for being a part of this family. Sometimes I think it’s weird when I hear people say things like that online. Like… you don’t know me personally, how can you be calling me family? But, you know what - I feel like the online world is becoming more and more distant every day so I don’t mind bringing back some of that personal feel again. We no longer see posts from our friends as easily on social media. We no longer know if a picture is real or AI-generated. But that’s not the point I’m trying to make. What I really want to express is my gratitude to those of you who choose to read this newsletter each week. As impersonal as a newsletter may seem, my goal is for you to still feel seen and appreciated. I recognize that behind the “subscriber” is a person - YOU - with a beautiful and important life story. I appreciate that you allow my voice to be part of that story. Sincerely, thank you.
I hope this newsletter encourages you to use your gift of creativity. Many people tell themselves, “I’m just not that creative or good at ____,” and it’s astonishing how skewed our self-perceptions can be. I have friends who insist they’re not good at certain things, but I completely disagree. It blows my mind that they can’t see the talent I see in them. I realize I likely fall into the same trap myself. I know I’m decent at several things, yet I’m often overly critical of my abilities. It would bring me immense joy to see a friend I care about discover their own happiness through their creative expression. I can only imagine others feel the same way about me when I hold myself back.
So here’s your encouragement this week to express your creativity without judgement of yourself. Who cares if it’s not as “good” as the person next to you. That’s subjective and really doesn’t matter. What’s the grading scale anyway? You’re not taking any tests that you can fail. You’re just having fun. So go enjoy being creative. The more you do it, and the more you enjoy it, the closer you’ll get to your goals of improvement.
Here’s your permission to release the pressure. Take a deep breath. Believe in yourself. Have some FUN! I hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks for reading!
This week’s creative challenge:
Have you ever tried making a silent film? Even if you’re not that into them, I think it could open up a whole new side of your creative brain. How would you have to think different about storytelling if you weren’t allowed to have any dialogue? I encourage you to try it out!
