Week 7

TIP OF THE WEEK

How do you view work that is better than yours? Do you more naturally think “dang, I wish my work looked like that” and get discouraged? Or do you more naturally go “wow, that’s amazing - I want to do that one day” and get inspired? I encourage you to take inventory of your mindset. We often hear the word “comparison” and view it as a negative. But let’s flip that negativity on its head. What if comparison could actually be a useful tool in your life? A thing that inspires you. Something to think about.

JORDYN UPDATES

Highs of the week:
• I am finally working on a “high quality” YouTube video again. I’ve missed making those.
• Spring is here and it’s super beautiful. All the trees are blooming and it’s making me want to go create every day.
• It sounds so simple - but editing the “3D view” of the screen recordings in my reel this week was so fun for me. I’m realizing that editing is one of my favorite parts of the filmmaking process.

Reality of the week:
• Doing everything by myself can be hard sometimes. Cooking, running a business, filming…don’t get me wrong, I love it, but I’m tired. There are many times I wish I just had a little bit of help. It’s going to be very important for me to keep an eye on burnout because I can feel it approaching.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Psalm 23:2-3

The theme of this week is patience. Patience with the creative process. I don’t what it is - but I have felt such an urgency within myself while working on this video I’m trying to create. Like, I truly love every part of the process - the filming, the editing - it’s enjoyable…and yet, I have this constant feeling like “I wish I was done with it already”. And sadly, I think that is stemming from a desire to get it posted so people can watch it. That mentality definitely takes away from the joy of the process and if I’m honest, I want to change my heart posture.

I think it’s totally okay to be passionate and excited to share your work. But I think it’s wise to consistently take a step back and reevaluate what’s currently driving your actions. Is it fear? Scarcity? Performance? Or is it joy? Excitement? Gratitude? Generosity?

Anyway - just doing a heart check. Maybe this doesn’t apply to you but maybe it does. Maybe you’ve also experienced seasons where you’re operating a bit higher strung. For some reason, you’re rushing and not fully enjoying something you know normally does bring you a sense of rest and enjoyment.

As always, I think the best fix to this is gratitude. I am so thankful that I genuinely enjoy filmmaking. I am so thankful for the beauty surrounding me that inspires me to create. I am so thankful for the people who take the time to read my newsletters. I am so thankful that I get to wake up every day and hear the birds chirping. I will continue this list of gratitude outside of this email because I know my heart and mind need it.

A final note about patience - I’ve been constantly reminded lately that good things take time. Dan, a member of More Than a Filmmaker, reminded me this week in one of our live calls that some of the most beautiful architecture in the world is still standing strong today because it was built slowly. Those buildings stand the test of time due to the care, quality, and intricate detail that went into them. And if you’ve never seen the artwork in those buildings - INSANE. So incredibly amazing. Art that would have taken months, maybe even years to complete.

So…here’s to patience. Here’s to slowing down our creativity. Here’s to gratitude for the ability to live, and breathe, and create another day. I look forward to showing you the video I’m working on - whenever it gets done 😉.
