Week 16

TIP OF THE WEEK

Let me ask you a few questions. Get real honest with yourself. No one else will know your answers. This is between you and you. Are your thoughts about your work generally more positive or negative? Do you actually believe people when they say you’ve created something good? Do you often minimize compliments because you think “no way they actually mean it”? Do you give up before starting something because you think you won’t do it well enough? Based on your own answers to those questions, I think you know my tip of the week. If a lot of your answers were “negative”, don’t let that negativity continue. Don’t get further down on yourself. I promise you, it will not help. You are important, valuable, and have great things to offer this world. Believe that.

JORDYN UPDATES

Highs of the week:
• What’s new? The live chat within the More Than a Filmmaker community was so great. I really enjoyed our conversation this week.
• I’m getting so close to finishing the instructions for the finance tracker (more updates below).
• I really enjoyed good time with good people this past weekend.

Reality of the week:
• I literally do not have enough time to do all that I “need” to do. It’s actually peaceful to realize that. I can’t do it all and that’s okay. That means I just get to learn more patience and delayed gratification.
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” 2 Peter 3:8

Hey! Did you notice you didn’t get a newsletter from me last week? For those who didn’t notice, well it happened, oops. For those who did notice, thank you for your grace with me. I’m happy to be back!

I hope you all are well! I was so encouraged that you guys were positively impacted by my last newsletter. For those that missed it, it was all about when plans get interrupted and make you feel behind. Well, sometimes that reality lasts longer than you expect as that has continued to be my reality for a few weeks now. Hence why I missed putting out a newsletter last week. My routine has been so thrown off. However, the things that are throwing it are technically really great things.

For those who live in America, last weekend (at the time I’m writing this newsletter) was a holiday. A lot of people had an extra day off of work. As someone who works for myself, I often forget about holidays because every day seems to blend together. I create my own schedule and routine for everything. I had many plans to do a lot of work last Monday but everyone else had fun plans because they finally had a 3-day weekend to take advantage of.

That reminded me how important it is to take holidays for myself too. I kept getting invited to different events and in the back of my mind I kept thinking “but I have work to get done…”. However, I finally hit a point where I was like…”Jordyn, just go have fun with the rest of the world - take a day off.” So I did. As a result, I got “behind” on work. But ya know what, I didn’t get behind on life. I’m so thankful for the memories and friendships that were nurtured on that day of rest. I’m glad I joined and let my work plans get interrupted again.

I’m sharing this in this newsletter as an encouragement to you to enjoy life as it comes. It’s so unhelpful to constantly be feeling like you’re missing out on something. If I said yes to having fun with friends but constantly worried about work - I wouldn’t have enjoyed friends. If I decided to work but then regretted not being with friends - I wouldn’t have enjoyed my work. The reality is, you can’t have it all. But you can enjoy what you choose. So try to be present in the moment.

We had a good chat in the online community this week about mindset. It was all about learning to reframe your view of a situation by considering “how it was successful”. For instance, if you go out to film something and then realize you don’t really know how to get the look you’re going for yet…you could walk away disappointed that you didn’t accomplish what you wanted. OR you could flip your perspective and realize that you went out there and tried and learned something. The first perspective makes you feel like a failure, the second perspective makes you feel like a success. The second perspective will give you the motivation you’re looking for to keep pushing forward.

So, my encouragement this week - focus on your mindset. Try to see how a moment is actually successful. Stop feeling like a failure in every area of your life. You are doing good things. Start recognizing the good for what it is. If there are bad habits that need to change - work towards changing them. And celebrate the fact that you are getting better moment by moment. Find the positive. Celebrate the positive. It will take you so much further.

Again, I hope you are well! Thanks for reading my newsletter!!

UPDATES:
I’ve been working SO hard on the finance tracker. I’m really trying to get it out to you…but I’m making sure it’s a super solid product first. If you’re interested in it, be sure to watch the video below. I hope you’re just as excited as I am for the launch! I believe it will really really help you guys!!! YAY!

This week’s creative challenge:

In the online community this week, we talked about creative goals that we have that seem impossible. Ya know, that goal or dream in the back of your head that if you were honest, you feel like you’re never going to achieve it. I want you to write down that goal this week and see if you can take one simple action towards it. Stop letting it be “just an idea” and see if somehow it could be a tangible reality one day. I encourage you to push yourself. It’s okay if you never accomplish it, but at least know that you tried to move toward it.

MY TOP RECOMMENDATIONS

I like re-sharing the small items because I genuinely do find these tools to be extremely useful in my kit on a regular basis.

AN EXTRA FOR THOSE WHO MAKE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF MY EMAILS :)

This may seem silly, but this is what some of my art and photography looked like in high school. I still think that last concept is pretty cool, haha. Practice, practice, practice will make you better. I’ve been doing photo, video, and design for YEARS. I’ve created so many terrible pieces of work that has led to where I’m at today. Don’t give up on yourself. Growth happens over time.

I thought I was so good at Adobe Illustrator haha.

I literally thought this photo by a dirty puddle was cool.

I still think this is kinda cool but throwback to the Sepia trend haha.

Have a great day!

Best, Jordyn
