Week 24

TIP OF THE WEEK

Ya know, it’s okay to have a bad day. A day where you’re just not as creative as you want to be. A day where you’re way more unproductive than you want. That’s normal. That will probably happen every week. It’s important that this isn’t every day. If so, that may be a sign to evaluate what’s causing your lack of energy and focus. But I’m here to encourage you that it’s okay to not feel like you’re crushing it every day. Our bodies are smart. They often tell us what we need - and sometimes…we need to rest well so we can come back better than ever. You will be way more productive in a day if you’re coming at it well rested rather than burnt out. Take care of yourself. It’s okay.

JORDYN UPDATES

Honestly this GIF is not from this week but it is from a video I worked on this week :)

Highs of the week:
• It was a great week. I created two YouTube videos in a day. It feels great to get “ahead” of schedule.
• Sometimes as a freelancer it’s hard to remember that not everyday is a work day. I had so much fun with my friends this weekend that it felt weird to come back to work. I consider that a success. It’s nice to not have work on my mind all the time.

Reality of the week:
• I fought some hardcore fatigue this week. So so so so tired. I really felt the slow Monday feeling this week. But that’s totally normal and okay sometimes!
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

Do you believe in yourself? Like seriously. Do you think highly of yourself as a creative? This is a tough topic to talk about because I am in no way trying to say anyone should be arrogant or prideful about their talent. However, I feel like this needs to be talked about because the more and more I talk to creatives, I see the opposite problem. So many creators think their work and talent is no good. They are constantly minimizing and criticizing their own gift.

This makes me so sad. It doesn’t serve anyone to think so poorly of yourself. Please don’t mind me using “second” person in this email. I’m not trying to put anyone on the defensive by saying “you”. I am truly just trying to encourage the creative who needs to hear this.

You are valuable. Who you are as a unique individual are inherently valuable because of exactly that - nobody else is you. Nobody else will think of creative ideas in the exact way you will. Nobody else has your story. Nobody else can be in the exact same place as you with the exact same angle of your camera.

Comparison kills. We all know that at this point. If you resonate with what I’m saying…if you are saying “yeah, that’s me - I don’t think I’m that great of a creative…” I deeply encourage you to take a step back and consider why you think that. Does your work look worse than the person next to you? If yes, do you think it’s because they simply just have more time and practice put into the craft than you do? If yes, then isn’t that normal? Of course someone would be better at you at something they practiced more.

Again, my heart here is love. I am so passionate about people believing in themselves because you truly have reason to. You are a beautiful creation with a lot to offer this world. You are subscribed to this newsletter most likely because you have some sort of draw to photo, filmmaking, or creativity. Don’t be afraid to be exactly where you are. The level of skill you have does not determine your value as a creative or individual. Your story and who you are bring all you need to the table. With that rooted belief…it’s going to be a lot easier to practice this craft with confidence. Time and effort will increase your skill but your value is already present.

I understand one newsletter may not change years of lies or false beliefs…but I want you to know that I believe in you. I truly do. Even without knowing your name. I so deeply believe that you as a human are a beautiful creation. That is true of all of us. I hope you can see that too.

You are awesome. I would love to see what you create. Go out there and enjoy the process! This life is a gift!

Remember when we used to…

This week’s creative challenge:

How often do you practice storytelling? It’s so easy to get caught up in improving our skills with a camera, but this week I challenge you to come up with a full storyline. Whether you make a film out of it or not - it’s good to flex that storytelling muscle once in a while.

MY TOP RECOMMENDATIONS

AN EXTRA THOUGHT FOR THOSE WHO MAKE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF MY EMAILS :)

This is very much just a sample shot to see how close I could get to these clovers. They were quite small by the way.

I (very briefly) tried out these macro filters on my camera this week. The GIF is what the 10x filter looks like on my 15-35mm lens. I’m not sure how I feel about them yet. I’m curious to try them on different lenses and see if they really help me get some of those macro shots I’m looking for without having to buy a macro lens. Anyone have any opinions on these?

Have a great day!

Best, Jordyn
